When it comes to celebrity breakups, Hollywood fans have witnessed our fair share of the bad and the ugly. (Donald Trump and Ivanka Trump, John and Kate Gosselin, and Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger come to mind.) But what about those Hollywood breakups that remind us there can be a good way to dissolve a relationship?
For these five couples, breaking up may have been hard to do — but they made it look painless by putting all mudslinging, public outbursts and trash talking aside. Sometimes we can learn something about civility from Tinseltown. Sometimes.
Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson
This divorce was so under the radar you may have forgotten these two were ever even a couple. After nearly four years together, two of which they were married, ScarJo and Ryan announced they were separating at the end of 2010. The details were so hush-hush that when the divorce was finalized the following summer, it barely registered as gossip. The worst thing these two ever said about one another was that the split was “painful” (he said) and that the relationship was “competitive” (she said). The Van Wilder actor went on to marry and have two kids with Blake Lively. Scarlett is now in the process of divorcing Romain Dauriac. They married in 2014 and have one daughter, Rose, together.
Bruce Willis and Demi Moore
It was a scandal at the time but when Bruce Willis and Demi Moore split in 1998, after 11 years of marriage and three kids together, the couple were careful not to turn on one another. They stayed close, co-parenting their daughters Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah. When Demi married Ashton Kutcher (the two split in 2013) even he had an amicable relationship with Bruce. In 2015 Rumer, now 28, told Larry King she was grateful her parents took the high road after divorcing. "I never had to split up vacations or split up birthdays," Rumer said of her parents divorce, which happened when she was 10. "They always made an effort to do all of the family events still together and made such an effort to still have our family be as one unit, as opposed to two separate things, which I think really made an impact."
Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin
Say what you will about the absurdity of “conscious uncoupling” but when actress and lifestyle empress Gwyneth Paltrow announced her marriage to Coldplay frontman Chris Martin was over, she did it in that classically goopy way only Gwyneth could. It was 2014 when the actress published a letter to her Goop fanbase announcing she and Chris were beginning the “uncoupling” process — which, apparently, takes two years to complete. The duo, who share two children, Apple and Moses, legally finalized their divorce in 2016. Even though they’ve both been linked to other people since the announcement, Gwyneth and Chris still vacation together and she was quoted as saying “He’s at my house every single day. We still have our family life.” No wonder she considers herself a role model for divorce.
Lisa Bonet and Lenny Kravitz
We know what you’re thinking: Lisa Bonet and Lenny Kravitz divorced? They did! Way back in 1993! But they are still so close that Lenny describes them as “best friends” and duo are often spotted out together. The six-year marriage between the actress and musician produced daughter Zoe Kravitz, now an accomplished actress and musician herself. “It makes things so easy that my parents are still very close,” Zoe has said. “My dad and my step-dad get along really well, and my dad loves and is close with my [step]brother and sister. It's really beautiful.”
Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr
“We love each other. We’re a family. We’re going to be in each other’s lives for the rest of our lives.” While you’d be forgiven for mistaking those words as part of Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr’s wedding vows, it’s actually a quote The Hobbit star gave after his divorce from the stunning super model. “There’s no question that for the sake of our son and everything else, we’re going to support one another and love each other as parents,” Orlando said. The couple married in 2010 and had now 2-year-old son, Flynn, before separating in 2016. Miranda describes them as “so close” and says she bought a house across street from Orlando in L.A.
